Mannitol Information

WHAT IS MANNITOL ?

Mannitol is a low calorie sugar alcohol (average 1.6 calories per gram).

Mannitol is naturally occurring in plants, fungi, bacteria and algae. In the food and pharmaceutical industries, Mannitol is primarily produced synthetically.
The composition and safety guidelines regarding usage are identical to those for the naturally occurring form.

WHAT IS THE MANNITOL USED FOR ?

Mannitol is a low calorie sweetener and is used in gums, candies, beverages, and various foods. According to the FDA, it does not cause a sudden increase in blood glucose.

Medically, it is used in much higher dose in I.V. treatment to decrease intracranial pressure.

IS MANNITOL SAFE ?

Yes. Mannitol, in the required dose, is considered as safe.
FDA has determined Mannitol to be GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) as a food additive – see FDA link and EFSA  link.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF USING MANNITOL AS A NUTRIMENT ?

Sometimes – bloating. Above 20gr (0.71 ounces) per day – may have a laxative effect.

Other side effects that are listed in the Internet refer to higher doses used for  I.V. treatment.

MANNITOL AND PARKINSON’S  DISEASE – DOSAGE

Based on the clinical mice model study, for a human body weight of 70Kg (154 lbs) the dose should be 10gr (0.35 oz), which is approximately a tablespoon (there is a difference in size between different tablespoons, therefore it is recommended to weigh the Mannitol before use). For a body weight of 90kg (198 lbs) the equivalent Mannitol is ~15gr (0.53oz), single dose, daily. See detailed table below.

Converting the mice dose to humans, per weight, was achieved based on the CDER guidance for industry, estimating the maximum safe starting dose in initial clinical trials for therapeutic use in adult healthy volunteers to allow participants to estimate the dose.

Participants in the registry after beginning to take Mannitol reported a gradual start beginning with 1 teaspoon (5g/0.17oz) for a period of 3-7 days and then increasing to 1 tablespoon for an additional week before adding yet another teaspoon/tablespoon.

Those who take 2 tablespoons report that they take one tablespoon in the morning and one in the evening OR 2 tablespoons in the morning OR 2 tablespoons in the evening. Some take it with coffee or tea and others with orange juice or lemonade.

Subjects are taking it in parallel to the already prescribed medication. Some reported they have reduced their Parkinson’s medications or remained on the same dose for a very long time, others stopped taking their Parkinson’s medication after consulting with their treating physician. Some have reported to their treating physician about the Mannitol, others kept this information to themselves to keep the physician objective.

Our goal is to collect significant data that will allow data analysis to be shared with all participants.

Detailed dosage per body weight table:

There is no conclusion, from the data that was collected so far, regarding the precision of dosage per weight. It is important, however, to note, that Mannitol is a food supplement, approved to be used as a low-calorie sweetener. See possible side effects mentioned above.

IMPORTANT: TO INSURE THE SUCCESS OF OUR INITIATIVE, KINDLY SHARE INFORMATION ONLY WITH REGISTRY PARTICIPANTS AND ONLY AFTER THEY HAVE COMPLETED THE QUESTIONNAIRE.
