Mannitol is a low calorie sweetener (1.6 calories per gram).
It is found in plants, fungi, bacteria and algae.
Manitol is produced mainly synthetically and can be found in –
• pharmaceutical industry – intravenous  injection of Mannitol is used  for example – to reduce intracranial pressure
• food industry – as a substitute for sugar (sweetener) in chewing gum, candy, beverages, foods and pastries
The composition and safety precautions for use are identical to those found in nature

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Mannitol does not increase sugar levels.
